Underground Utilities PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Given the many projects we have managed in the public rights of way we have acquired a tremendous amount of experience with mitigating the issues created when a gas line, fiber optic duct bank, telephone cable or other exisiting condition is discovered and solutions have to be found quickly.Image

With very few exceptions improvements in the public space requires working with public and private utilities. The utilities that are underground can in some cases be located horizontally but usually how deep they are has to be found during exccavation. Record drawing locations--if the drawings exist--are often inaccurate.

Work under the streets in a dense urban environment such as downtown Houston Texas presents many challanges during the construction process. Depending on what type of improvement is being made the existing lines may have to be relocated when discovered. Impacts to the bid contract and the adjacent stakeholders must be quickly and decisivly addressed.

Overhead Relocations PDF  | Print |  E-mail

As our society has become more connected we have added tremendously to the overhead wiring that connects us and powers our homes and businesses. The addition of fiber optic cabling has in many places more than doubled the number of overhead wires along our streets. The ground under our streets in many places is laced with colored plastic ducts with thousands of fiber strands. This web page was delivered to you down one of those communication pathways.

Removal really means relocation to another place--overhead or underground. Both are expensive and bring different but related issues. One of the often un-noticed but relentless efforts with the reforming of downtown Houston has been the removal of overhead utilities that clutter the skyline and make new development more costly.

The principals of DAC have played key roles in developing plans to remove those utilities and managing the projects during the removal. We have on-going relationships with the electrical, gas and communication distributers.

Surface Water Transmission Program PDF  | Print |  E-mail

This program installed large diameter surface water lines and pump stations across Houston to transfer water from Lake Houston to areas on the west side of the City. The water lines ranged in size from 96" diameter high pressure water lines to thousands of residential and commercial service taps from 12" distribution lines.Image

Installation of large pipes in the streets often requries relocation or temporary removal of other utilities including: storm and wasterwater collection lines; natural gas lines; and overhead utility poles and and the array of lines supported by those poles.

Restoration of the work area required reconstruction of all or a large portion of the streetscape that included restoration of any landscaping, signage, traffic and street facilities, intersection signals and all the other components of a neighborhood, commercial or urban environment.
